HOUSTON (KTRK) -- One person is dead after a deputy-involved shooting in northwest Harris County yesterday.

Two Harris County sheriff's deputies, one of whom just graduated from the academy, responded around 4:40pm to a suspicious person call in the 3300 block of Pebble Trace near T.C Jester. At the same time, there was a 911 call made regarding a medical emergency at a home next door. A woman inside that house reported she heard a loud noise and found a female victim lying on the first floor, bleeding from the head.

As the deputies were responding to the suspicious person call, Deputy Thomas Gililand says a man popped out from behind the fence and fired two shots at them. One deputy returned fire, killing him.

Investigators want to know whether the two calls are related. The female victim with the head injury was taken to the hospital.

"How does he (the suspicious person) fit with anything? If the first scene is related to the second, we don't know yet. Obviously the female who was in the home, we're trying to find out from her but she was transported in very critical condition. As soon as we can get some information from her maybe we can start putting the pieces, but right now we're trying to get exactly what happened," explained Deputy Gilliland.

The deputy who fired is a veteran field training officer, according to Gilliland, a spokesman for the Harris County Sheriff's Office. The other deputy is considered a probationary officer. This is her first week on the job. They ride as a two-person team during the training period.

The suspect's identity has not been released.
