NEW YORK -- A New York City police officer responding to reports of a man with a gun has been shot and wounded in a gunfight.

The officer has been taken to a hospital. His condition is unknown.

The shooting happened in Manhattan's East Harlem neighborhood on Tuesday night.

Police say another person was found with a gunshot wound to the leg several blocks away. It's unclear if that person is connected to the police officer's shooting. The person's condition is unknown.

A section of a busy parkway has been shut down near where the officer was shot.

Police haven't said what happened to the armed man.
