Mother shot to death while toddler was inside NE Houston home

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A woman is dead after police say her ex-husband shot and killed her in northeast Houston early Tuesday morning. It happened at the East Lockwood Plaza apartments.

Investigators say the man shot his ex-wife at point blank range after a fight over their two-year-old daughter. Police say the woman ran from her ex-husband into her mother's home while he chased her, then fired several shots. The little girl was not hurt. It's not clear if she saw her mother shot. Police say the former couple had a violent past.

"From what we understand, they've had domestic issues before, which ultimately led to their divorce," said Latonia Bailey with Houston police.

The little girl was not hurt and is in the custody of family.

Police arrested the man on scene but have not released his name.

The woman was 28 years old.
