HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Donations and volunteers have surged for Meals on Wheels following President Trump's proposed budget cuts that could seriously affect the organization.

President Trump's budget calls for an 18 percent decrease in funding for the Department of Health and Human Services.

This would eliminate funding for Meals on Wheels. The program is about 35 percent of its total funding.

Donations and volunteers have surged for Meals on Wheels following President Trump's proposed budget cuts that could seriously affect the organization.

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee hosted the "Stop the Trump Budget, Save Meals on Wheels" press conference on Sunday to save crucial social service programs that are at risk of being slashed or gutted.

"These cuts are immoral and would devastate the most members of our community who have already suffered enough. We must stand together to fight for American values and so "no" to the Trump budget," said U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee.

The organization delivers meals to the poor, elderly, and veterans who are unable to leave their homes.

Meals on Wheels said they received 50 times the normal amount of donations this week and a 500 percent jump in volunteers since the release of the White House budget cut.
