Mandatory evacuation issued for Wharton residents as Colorado River flooding looms

Residents on the west side of Wharton have been told to leave

The time to get out is now. That's the message from the mayor of Wharton as the Colorado River continues to rise. Mayor Domingo Montalvo has called for a mandatory evacuation for some residents, effective at 5:30pm.

The order affects around 30 homes on streets Outlar, Camellia, Azalea and Columbine. Officials believe only one person has stayed.

A curfew is in effect from dark until 6:30am.


Wharton ISD canceled school for Friday.

A Red Cross Shelter is opening at Wharton Junior High School.
