License plate readers, cameras could find their way to Memorial Villages

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A virtual fence might one day wrap its way around the Memorial Villages.

The three cities of Bunker Hill, Hunters Creek, and Piney Point are studying the multi-million dollar idea.

The proposed idea is pretty straight forward. License plate readers and cameras would be installed at the 27 entry points into the communities. The equipment would record the plate information 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Eyewitness News caught up with Memorial Villages Assistant Police Chief Ray Schultz. He said the cameras can track in real-time whether or not a vehicle is wanted by the state. He said the information can help solve stolen vehicle cases, Amber Alerts, or Silver Alerts.

"We import about 99 percent of our criminals. We can show that statistically," said Schultz. "When we do have crimes occur, we do the investigation. We end up making the arrest and identifying the suspect. They come from somewhere else to get here."

City leaders expect the study to be completed by spring. They will then take the information to the public and ask for input.
