Beaumont man killed in officer-involved shooting after chase

JEFFERSON COUNTY, TX -- A 36-year-old Beaumont man was killed in an officer-involved shooting after a pursuit through Jefferson County Tuesday morning.

Shortly before 9am Tuesday, Jefferson County deputies attempted a traffic stop on a 1998 Mercedes SUV traveling westbound on I-10. The driver refused to stop and began evading law enforcement. The suspect fled into Chambers County where deputies were joined by Chambers County Sheriff's Office, Texas Department of Public Safety and Baytown Police.

As the vehicle continued into Harris County on I-10, authorities say the suspect attempted to strike a Baytown Police Department officer who was deploying spike strips. Troopers ultimately used a PIT maneuver to stop the vehicle. According to the preliminary investigation, the driver again displayed his firearm, and troopers and deputies discharged their firearms in response. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspect was identified as a 36-year-old Beaumont man.

No law enforcement officers were injured.

This is an ongoing investigation by the Texas Rangers, Harris County District Attorney's Office and the Baytown Police Department. No additional information is available at this time.
