A man stabbed an intruder to death who tried to break into his house in southeast Houston.

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- The large television jutted out from the front door of a small downstairs apartment. It was, police said, evidence of a home invasion that failed terribly.

Around 10 a.m., a man and a woman barged into an apartment just off the Gulf Freeway in southeast Houston.

"A male and a female suspect pushed their way into the apartment," said Houston police detective Ernest Aguilera.

"They assaulted the couple, attempted to rob them, take some TVs," Aguilera said.

Police said the suspects, in their 20s, weren't expecting the couple, in their late 50s, to fight back.

However, that's exactly what police said happened.

According to investigators, the male resident took a kitchen knife and stabbed both suspects.

The male suspect died and the female ran away.

"I'm glad they did. They need people to be able to fight back," said neighbor Sharon Wade, who's lived in the area for more than 70 years.

Investigators were able to locate the female suspect at a nearby gas station.

She was bleeding from her stab wounds, and asked the gas station attendant to call 911.
