HOUSTON (KTRK) -- The newest class of Houston police cadets is getting extra training about the many different communities across the nation's fourth largest city.

HPD says 74 HPD cadets will board a METRO bus this morning to embark on a day-long cultural diversity tour.

A guide will take the class to several communities, beginning with Sunnyside. At each stop, the guide will give cadets a closer look at the people, their history, culture, soci-economics and how the community perceives police.

The cadets will also visit and learn about the Chinese, Muslim, and Denver Harbor communities, in addition to the City of Houston Sobering Center.

Officials say the tour is designed to expose cadets to the variety of cultures found in the city, and the department's long-standing commitment to community policing.
