HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Monday was a sad day at the Houston Zoo. Bailey, an elderly grizzly bear, was euthanized due to complications from arthritis and old age, according to a posting on the zoo's web site.

Zoo officials say they opted to euthanize Bailey after noticing his mobility, which was already limited, began to decline. They had also been administering pain meds to Bailey, and modified his habitat to make it less painful for him to get around.

Bailey was born in 1980 and came to the Houston Zoo in 2007. Before coming to the zoo, Bailey and his twin brother, Boomer, were at the Houston SPCA for a year after the organization confiscated them from someone they say wasn't taking good care of them.

Boomer passed away earlier this year.
