HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A Harris County Sheriff's deputy opened fire on a man who reportedly kicked in the door of the deputy's apartment in northwest Harris County.

A HCSO spokesperson says the deputy was home when he heard someone kicking a door shortly before noon. He checked the peephole but didn't see anything at first. A few minutes later, he heard more kicking and this time a man kicked in his door. The deputy fired one shot at the suspect. They believe the burglar was hit, but he got away.

The man fled the scene in a red Mitsubishi sedan with a possible accomplice. Authorities are checking local hospitals and clinics. He's described as a black male, wearing a white shirt and dark pants, and possibly suffering a gunshot wound.

The deputy's name has not been released. He was not hurt. He's been with the Harris County Sheriff's Office for less than two years. He will be put on administrative leave and undergo a psych and medical evaluation.
