A 5-year-old girl died after she was run over outside an H-E-B store in Lake Jackson

LAKE JACKSON, TX (KTRK) -- A five-year-old girl was hit and killed outside an H-E-B in Brazoria County Saturday, according to the Lake Jackson police department.

It happened around 4pm at the new store 97 Oyster Creek Drive at Oak Drive in Lake Jackson.

According to authorities, a man and his daughter walked out of the store. Police say the girl was apparently walking behind her father when she stopped in the parking lot and laid down to look down in a storm drain. That's when an oncoming driver ran over her. The girl was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 75-year-old driver, who was visibly upset, was cooperating with authorities. The driver showed no signs of alcohol or impairment, according to police.

At this time, police are calling this a tragic accident.
