HOUSTON (KTRK) -- The memorial to Vanessa Garcia has grown since she was hit crossing the street on Bertrand last week.

On Friday, hundreds of relatives, friends, classmates and teachers packed into Brookside Funeral Home to say their final goodbyes to the McArthur High School honors student.

Garcia was walking to her bus stop on Bertrand last Friday when she was hit by a pick-up truck. Investigators say the driver was trying to pass another vehicle.

There are no sidewalks on the busy street and neighbors say that needs to change.

We took this community's concerns about they camera of this road to Harris County Judge Ed Emmett Friday at his State of the County address. He says the county is now an urban area.

"We need to start treating as an urban area. Right now the county only gets property tax, no sales tax. As rapidly growing as Harris County is... it's all we can do to keep up with growth. To keep up with sidewalks... its something the commissioners need to be looking into," Emmett said.

If and when the county adds a sidewalk, we'll let you know.
