Fundraiser held for boy child mutilated by his mother
A young boy who survived a vicious attack will need a lot of help to recover

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A community came together Saturday to help a little boy authorities say was stabbed and mutilated by his mother in northwest Harris County.

Authorities say 4-year-old Ayden Duarte was attacked by his 23-year-old mother, Jenea Ann Mungia. He was stabbed repeatedly before a stranger stepped in to help.

"Ayden is doing fine. He's doing real well. He's still in the hospital but he is recovering," said family friend Jim Longoria.

Organizers sold T-shirts, barbecue plates and items donated by local businesses. Many attendees were strangers touched by Ayden's story.

"A man never stands taller than when he stoops to help a child. And that's what we have here. We have a lot of people bending down to help pick Ayden up in his time of need," Longoria said.

The money will go toward medical expenses for Ayden, who's been in the hospital for the past month. Family friends say he's doing better now but will need long-term care.
