Former ABC13 sports director Bob Allen has died
We're saddened by the passing of our longtime friend and colleague Bob Allen.

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- We've lost a giant in Houston media and in sports journalism at large.

As the social media tributes grow, it is evident Bob Allen's generous spirit touched so many who watched him on television screens throughout the city.

We're sad to report Bob has lost his courageous battle with cancer. He was 70 years old.

A steady stream of memories began just after midnight, as news of Bob's death reached family and friends.

Colleagues from ABC13 and those who knew him from media outlets across the country are chiming in, each with warm anecdotes. It becomes evident as you read them just how loved Bob Allen was in the city of Houston and in the sports world.

On Facebook, Jovita Gonzalez says, "My condolences to the ABC family!! RIP Bob Allen. The best sports commentator ever! You will be missed."

Ya'Vonne Carraway Miles writes, "RIP Bob Allen. My condolences to his family, and his ABC 13 family. Bob you were the greatest of all Sport casters#1. You will be missed! I loved this great man."

Mary Mobley Johnson says she remembers running into Bob in Deer Park once.

"I watched Bob Allen my whole life," Johnson said. "It saddens my heart to hear this news. Prayers are with his family and loved ones."

Bob's family issued the following statement: "On behalf of Bob Allen's family, we are so incredibly touched by the love and support shown to us during this difficult time. My dad valued his place in the Houston community, and the encouragement he received from you over the last two years gave him more strength and comfort than you will ever know.

We are in the process of planning a private Memorial Service for Bob's family, friends, colleagues and loved ones."

Bob is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Genna and Brent Fincher, his grandchildren Mason and Hayden Fincher, his brother and sister-in-law Ken and Debbie Egalnick, niece Kristin Egalnick, nephew Kenny Egalnick and great nephew- Kane Hutchison.
