Mom, daughter escape as flames engulf home in N. Houston

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Two people and a dog were forced out in the cold after their home went up in flames in north Houston, but fortunately no one was hurt.

The fire broke out just before 1am at a home on Ripplewind Lane at Creekbriar Drive in the Olde Oaks subdivision.

When firefighters arrived, they found neighbors watching flames shooting through the roof of the house.

"Me and my fiance were in the house and we were smelling smoke, and we came out and saw the flames on top of the roof," neighbor Arlene Johnson says. "We went and knocked on the door to make sure they were getting out."

Johnson says the mother and her daughter who lived in the home for more than 20 years were already in the process of evacuating the home when she arrived.

Klein Fire Chief David Bessolo says they received multiple calls about the fire. Firefighters faced high winds and some hail during the fire, but Bessolo says neither played a factor.

Firefighters from Klein, Pondarosa, Champions and Little York Fire Departments were called to help contain the blaze.

Johnson says she feels for the family.

"Heartbroken and appreciative they got out safely," she says. "That's the most important thing, that they got out safe."
