HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A pickup truck crash turned into a homicide investigation early this morning in northeast Houston.
The sound of the crash woke the family living in the home where the wreck happened on Bretton near Colton around midnight. Residents then called police.
"I figured it was probably just a drunk guy or somebody trying to break-in, so I just called them and told them, there's a truck in my lawn." said resident, Jacob Guzman.
The truck was on the lawn, but did not hit the house. When officers arrived, they found the driver dead with a gunshot wound.
"We do not believe that the shooting actually happened at the residence. We think it happened somewhere else and he came to a halt at that location," said Steve Straughter of HPD Homicide.
Police did not release the victim's identity.
