Couple rescued from floodwaters
A homeless couple sleeping under a bridge had to call for help with flood waters quickly rose

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A homeless couple had to be rescued this morning in downtown Houston when the bridge they were sleeping under started taking on water from the heavy rains.

It happened around 7:30am this morning around the 300 block of Smith Street at the Franklin Street bridge.

The couple had been sleeping under the bridge when it started raining.

"Usually I'm smart enough to know, "OK when it gets down to the rain, you don't stay down on the bayou,'" David Jackson said. "I didn't realize it was going to rain this bad."

"He wanted to make sure that it didn't get any higher so he stayed up and I went back to sleep," said Annette Bowers. "When it got a little higher, that's when he called for help."

Houston fire rescue used a boat to get them to safety. The couple plans on staying in a shelter tonight.
