HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Hundreds of kids who may not have had the resources to 'bundle up' in the cold now have an extra layer for the winter months.

Today Firefighters handed out 615 winter coats to students at James I. Ketlesen Elementary in north Houston.

The 'pay it forward' event is part of their annual 'coats for kids' drive. Firefighters say the donations are just part of keeping the community safe.

"Look, we're blessed as firefighters in this good city and we want to give back to the community," said President Houston Professional Firefighters Association, Alvin White.

Last year, the Firefighters Association donated coats to students at Gallegos Elementary and they hope to donate even more coats to kids next year.
