Boat safety tips offered in new app
Vital information from the United States Coast Guard is now available through an app

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Boat traffic on our area waterways is expected to pick-up soon since Memorial Day is just around the corner. The Coast Guard introduces a new tool to help keep you safe.

It features safety tips, an equipment checklist, float plans and ways to report pollution and suspicious activity.

"I think it's a really good idea especially for the kids nowadays," said boater Vincent Richard. "We use cell phones for everything. Just to have a checklist and know everything that needs to be in your boat."

Coast Guard officials say The Boating Safety Mobile app was not designed to replace a the marine VHF radio. The app features state boating information; a safety equipment checklist; free boating safety check requests; navigation rules; float plans; and calling features to report pollution or suspicious activity.

The app also has an Emergency Assistance button which, with locations services enabled, will call the closest Coast Guard command center.
