Church volunteer turns self in on sex assault of child charge

SEALY, TX (KTRK) -- A 39-year-old church volunteer is behind bars after he surrendered to Waller County officials Wednesday.

Nilson Daniel Vargas is charged with sexual assault of a child. He is accused of molesting a then-16-year-old boy he met in 2008 at the Christian City Fellowship in Sealy where detectives say he served as a volunteer.

Investigators are now looking into whether there may have been other victims.

A judge has set Vargas' bond at $500,000.

If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison and would be required to pay a fine as large as $10,000. He would also be required to register as a sex offender.
