HOUSTON (KTRK) -- The Houston Fire Department dive team recovered the body of a 9-year-old girl from White Oak Bayou Tuesday morning.

She went missing from a nearby apartment complex around 6:30 in the morning.

Tennita Hardy lives in the complex and works as a security officer there. She said she was off duty Tuesday morning when a little boy ran up to her.

"The little boy came to me and said his sister was missing. "I live right there where they're standing, and I immediately come looking for her, and I couldn't find her," Hardy said, "I walked the bayou but I didn't walk far enough and they found her floating in the bayou. And it's hurting, y'all, it's hurting."

Hardy said she knows the family, and that the 9-year-old girl had special needs. She said the girl's parents are devastated.

An investigator on-scene said it looks to be a tragic accident, that foul play is not apparent at this time
