HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A child was hit by a car while crossing the street. It happened at a busy intersection on Highway 6 and now a 13-year-old is in the hospital.

It happened around 8am at the intersection of Highway 6 South and Empanada Road. A 13-year-old who attends Albright Middle School, was running across Highway 6 from east to west on Empanada Road, when he was hit by car.

According to an Alief ISD spokesperson and witnesses on the scene, deputies are telling them it looks like the car had the right-of-way, and the child tried to outrun the car in order to cross the street.

The child was airlifted to the hospital. Now school officials are reminding everyone how dangerous it is when crossing the street.

"We encourage parents to please reinforce with your students to cross only at crosswalks, and when you have the signal," said Craig Eichhorn, Alief ISD spokesperson. "Don't just dart out in front of traffic, especially a seven-lane highway like we're on right now."

An Alief ISD spokesperson has been told the child is going to be OK. At this point it looks like the driver will not receive a citation.
