Central Texas wildfire grows to more than 6 square miles

SMITHVILLE, TX -- A Central Texas wildfire fueled by unseasonably hot weather has burned more than 6 square miles and destroyed at least nine homes.

The Texas A&M Forest Service says the fire near Smithville was 15 percent contained early Thursday. Smithville is about 45 miles southeast of Austin.

Agency spokeswoman Jessica Jackson says nobody has been hurt in the blaze that started Tuesday, but that more than 150 homes remain at risk.

Authorities have evacuated residents from at least 30 neighborhoods and Buescher (BISH'-er) State Park will be closed through Sunday

Gov. Greg Abbott plans to visit the park known for its thick spread of pine and elm trees and a winding, hilly landscape on Thursday.

Sunny, clear conditions are forecast to continue through Monday, with temperatures reaching the 90s.
