CHICAGO, IL -- Robert Smith, 60, was found dead in an apartment in Chicago's Near West Side neighborhood. The 1-year-old girl he was babysitting subsequently went missing.

The child was located a short time later. She was taken to Comer Children's Hospital, where she is listed in good condition. Police have not said how the little girl is connected to the victim.

Chicago firefighters investigating a smoke alarm had to break down the door of an apartment in the 100-block of North Wood Street around 9 p.m. Monday. They found the Smith face down, with multiple stab and gunshot wounds.

Police are investigating the victim's death as a homicide. They said it is unclear whether the 1-year-old girl was with Smith when he was killed.

The Chicago Tribune reports a relative had gone to check on the victim after his wife called several times, but no one answered. That relative reportedly heard a smoke detector going off inside the apartment and called 911.

Fire officials said food burning on the stove had set off the alarm.

Police said this is a domestic-related incident. Investigators have not said if they have identified a suspect.
