CHICAGO -- A man was killed and a woman critically wounded in a shooting in the city's South Chicago neighborhood, police say.

Police are searching for a suspect they say came out of a gangway in the 8400-block of South Colfax Saturday and started shooting.

James Jones, 21, was found dead at the scene and a 46-year-old woman was rushed to the hospital.

The victim's family says Jones died protecting his mother Alicia, shielding her as shots were fired.

James is the third child she has lost to violence. In 2006, her daughter Antoinette Means was fatally shot at her job as a manager of a KFC. In 1994, Jones' 4-year-old son was killed when someone tossed a Molotov cocktail through a window of her home.

Alicia is recovering at a local hospital.
