This is National Wildlife Week.

National Wildlife Week is National Wildlife Federation's (NWF) longest-running education program designed around teaching and connecting kids to wildlife. This year's theme is "Living with Wildlife."

The NWF has some great tips on how to live alongside our wild neighbors, even here in the city.

According to the National Wildlife Federation, an estimated 100 million to 1 billion birds are killed each year when they fly into windows. Collisions is the leading cause of bird deaths. Most of that mortality happens during migration, but birds flying to and from feeders and birdbath are also often victims of window strikes.

You can help protect the birds in your neighborhood by placing your bird feeders and bird baths 3 feet or less from your winds. The idea is that when feeders are close to windows, birds cannot build up enough momentum to injure themselves should they hit your window.

You can also help prevent bird collisions by decorating your windows. Applying window film or decals is one option, but keep in mind 80% of the window must be covered to be effective.

Recently the National Wildlife Federation put out their list of the top ten cities for wildlife. Austin, Texas is number 1 on their list!
