Harris County Hazmat spent several hours overnight cleaning up a mess left behind when a double trailer caught fire around midnight on I-45 at Northgate Crossing in Spring.

The Spring Fire Department says all but one northbound main lanes were closed while hazmat crews cleaned up and police investigated the wreck.

"It started out as a brake fire," said Dist. Chief Joel Crenshaw with the Spring Fire Department. "It caught some of the product inside on fire, and we had to shut down the freeway to make sure it was not hazardous material."

Officials say the truck was carrying a neutral caustic acid that's used in animal feeds. The truck also had bunch of boxes carrying assorted items like t-shirts.

The fire melted the frame of the cab and burned off the tires. Crews hauled away the mess around 5:20am and reopened the freeway to all traffic.
