2 dead, including child, after school bus accident in Brazoria County
MANVEL, Texas (KTRK) -- Two people are dead, including a 5-year-old boy, after an accident involving an Alvin ISD school bus in Brazoria County.
According to deputies, no children were on board the bus at the time of the accident on County Road 99 near Highway 6.
The bus rear-ended a car that was stopped at a red light and sent it through the intersection where it crashed into two other vehicles.
Alvin ISD officials said the bus was starting its afternoon route when the accident happened.
"From what she saw, the bus ran the red light," said Tim Savage.
Savage's wife was in the SUV that was also involved in the accident.
"She's OK. She has a bruised leg and shoulder," he said.
Karen Salazar, 60, and her grandson, Joseph Salazar, 5, were killed in the accident. Salazar's father told Eyewitness News that he had just celebrated his birthday on Mother's Day.
Joseph was a Pre-K student at E.C. Mason Elementary School, Alvin ISD officials said.
"Our hearts and minds are grieving right now for the members of the family involved in this unthinkable tragedy. This tragedy is too difficult to process and the emotions are too raw to feel anything but hurt and sadness for the family. This family is at the forefront of our minds at this time," Superintendent Buck Gilcrease said in a statement.
Lauren Bray also witnessed the accident.
"I did CPR on the woman while other people were with the boy," Bray said.
There were no students on the bus. DPS said the preliminary cause of the accident is the bus driver's failure to control speed.
