GALVESTON, TX (KTRK) -- A 13-year-old girl is in critical condition after jumping from the back of a moving bus on the Gulf Freeway Monday afternoon.

According to Galveston ISD officials, the school bus was headed from an alternative school on Attwater back into Galveston. While the bus was in motion, two girls on board got into a scuffle.

The bus driver pulled over and separated the students, putting one girl in the front and the other in back. When the bus started moving again, officials say the girl in the back opened the emergency exit and jumped out. Other students witnessed this.

The incident occurred on I-45 southbound, about a mile north of the Galveston Causeway.

The girl was not struck by any other vehicles. She was transported to UTMB in critical condition.
