Pioneering Muslim sorority begins rush at UT-Austin

AUSTIN, Texas (KTRK) -- The first Muslim sorority in the U.S. is beginning its run this week at UT-Austin.

Mu Delta Alpha's UT-Austin chapter is poised to welcome up to 20 members to its inaugural class, KXAN reported.

The first chapter was established last year at UT-Dallas as a professional sorority that comprises of networking and community service.

UT-Austin's chapter was launched when its founding member noticed she wasn't able to meet many other Muslim women in her field.

"We have a lot of Muslim women, girls who are aspiring to go into careers that they don't usually have direct role models for," said UT student Maria Haseem.

A third chapter is being launched jointly among students at University of North Texas and Texas Women's University.
