Melania Trump and Karen Pence traveling to visit Harvey victims
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (KTRK) -- First Lady Melania Trump and Second Lady Karen Pence will spend today in south Texas in some of the areas hardest hit when Hurricane Harvey slammed ashore in late August.
It has been three months since the devastating storm ravaged large swaths of Texas. And while she's been here twice before, tomorrow she travels without her husband, President Trump.
She leads the visit that will include meeting with first responders, workers at a food pantry, and with a family who lost its home in the storm. She'll tour their property and see their temporary FEMA supplied housing. She will also visit a local school.
"The effects of the hurricane season are still being felt throughout southern portions of the United States and in Puerto Rico, and residents still need our help," said First Lady Melania Trump in a statement provided by The White House. "While I am heartened by the strength and resilience of those impacted by the storms, I will continue doing all that I can to lend a voice and shine a spotlight on those who need assistance to rebuild and start new family traditions. As Christmas and the New Year approach, I encourage people to lend their time volunteering or providing financial support to those still reeling from the hurricanes."
The trip includes stops in Corpus Christi, in Rockport, and Aransas Pass. Eyewitness News reporter Tom Abrahams will be traveling with the First Lady throughout her visit and will bring you updates throughout the day.
