HOUSTON (KTRK) -- It's official. The University of Houston named its new head football coach, and they didn't have to look very far for him.

After two seasons as the offensive coordinator for UH, former University of Texas quarterback Major Applewhite has landed his first head coaching gig.

Here are 10 things you should know about Htowntakeover's new head coach:

1. Applewhite is a native of Baton Rouge, La.

2. He was a starting quarterback for Catholic High School where he threw for 50 touchdowns in more than two years.

3. Applewhite has 13 years of coaching experience.

4. He was the all-time leader in passing yards, passing touchdowns, passing attempts and total offense at University of Texas.

5. Applewhite was 22-8 record as starting quarterback for UT.

6. He graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in sports management.

7. Applewhite signed with the New England Patriots days after the 2002 draft, but quit prior to the start of camp to finish his degree and pursue a career in coaching.

8. He served as offensive coordinator at Rice University in 2006, and at the University of Alabama under Nick Saban in 2007. He was the youngest offensive coordinator among Division I-A schools at that time.

9. Applewhite is married with two kids - one daughter, one son.

10. He served as UH offensive coordinator for two seasons.
