Harris County commissioners unanimously approved funding for cameras on officers

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Harris County commissioners unanimously approved funding to buy body cameras for local law enforcement.

On Friday, the Harris County District Attorney's Office announced it would give $1.9 million to the Houston Police Department and the Harris County Sheriff's Office to help purchase body cameras. The goal to record interactions between officers and civilians, and create more of an openness between law enforcement and the public.

"Body cameras are not going to solve all of our problems, but from a prosecutor's perspective, it gives us a vital piece of evidence, more information with which to seek the truth and top seek justice which is our mission," said Harris County DA Devon Anderson.

The funding for the body cameras will come from forfeiture assets collected by the DA's office.
