Love Field evacuation has some effect on Houston Hobby Airport

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- If you're traveling, expect Friday to be a busy day at both Bush and Hobby airports.

A total of 175,000 people are expected use Houston's airports today, with 140,000 of those travelers going through Bush.

On Friday morning, at least two flights coming in from Dallas Love Field were canceled and four were delayed. Around 4:30 on Friday morning, the airport was evacuated.

A component of an AC unit caught fire. The situation was under control quickly but the evacuation lead to delays and cancellations.

Angie Peterson was bound for Houston and had just checked her bag when she and other passengers had to evacuate.

"I just figured they were taking extra precautions and they handled everything really well. Everyone was organized in the line," said traveler, Angie Peterson.

Peterson said her flight was delayed about an hour.

"I was kind of impressed with how smooth it was considering it's right before Christmas," said Peterson.

Otherwise, it was business as usual at Hobby airport on Friday morning.

The Topham family got up at 3:30 to travel from Houston to grandma's house in Maryland. The Topham's have three boys, ages 2, 4 and 6 years old.

The boys love to fly.

"They take joy in the little things, like they get excited about the shuttle bus and the plane," said Toni Topham, the boys' mother.

Bill Bagley, a spokesperson for the airports, said travel is expected to be up from Thanksgiving.

Harvey impacted Thanksgiving travel but since then more are able to fly out now.

Before heading out, you can check TSA checkpoint wait times, flight times and places to eat and shop on the airport system's website.

Katherine Whaley has updated information on parking at both airports.
