Pearland mom of 4 makes it her mission to help homeless

PEARLAND, Texas (KTRK) -- A single mother of four from Pearland has made it her mission to give back and help the homeless.

Grace de los Santos is a retired medical field nurse and has always wanted to open a non-profit organization to help people in need.

But instead, every year, she makes a point to gather items like soap, a toothbrush, socks and snack bars to pass out to the homeless across the Houston area.

She puts the items in small ziplock bags and writes the message "Jesus loves you. Smile." She makes about 50 bags per week.

"I will stop in the middle of traffic or jump out my car and hand out the bags," de los Santos said.

She even gives them sugar, salt and pepper and plastic silverware.

De los Santos said she uses her own money to buy most of the items.

She said if she's able to buy for herself, she can think about other people and buy extras to help them.

"My kids say I'm a giver and understanding. They help too when they are with me," de los Santos said.

De los Santos hopes that her efforts can encourage others to help, even in the smallest of ways.

"I have been blessed to help others," she said.

She said she is looking for people to donate blankets, jackets and socks. If you would like to help, you can contact her on social media.
