HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- After Harris County Precinct One Constable's Office made national headlines about an eviction story, the office started a GoFundMe to help the people who were getting evicted.
The office is working with local partners and using the funds raised to host a series of mobile pop-up events to help renters and landlords during the pandemic.
Rockell Evans is a single parent who has been out of a job since the pandemic hit Houston in March.
"I pulled all my savings," Evans said. "It's really hard as far as unemployment, it's really not enough."
Evans said she has applied for jobs, rental relief aid and even signed the CDC's declaration form to delay the eviction process, but she was still served a notice in October.
That's why she was one of the 100 people already waiting in line Wednesday morning, hoping the Harris County Precinct One Constable's mobile event would provide her some direction.
"I just hope to get some valuable information that's going to help me and my son," Evans said. "I'm a single mom right here in the Houston area. I'm looking for whatever type of information I can receive here today."
Harris County Precinct One Constable Alan Rosen said the GoFundMe raised roughly $248,000, and it will go towards hosting a series of events for its Eviction Assistance Program.
"We're here to help you. We're here to help you get through some of the most difficult times of your life," Rosen said. "I want the people to know, that gave money from all over the world, what this money is being used for. I want them to see what their money is being used for, and I'm just so thankful."
There is not a date set up yet for the next event, however, you can contact the Eviction Defense Coalition at 713.982.7340 or South Texas College of Law Houston at 346.250.1069 for eviction assistance.
