HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A southeast Houston family is sleeping in a very cold house, thanks to a hit-and-run driver.

Melinda Murphy says she was watching a movie overnight when she heard screeching tires and a loud crash. By the time she got to the bedroom to see what happened, the driver had taken off.

"It sounded like someone was just caving in, like the whole house was caving in like, boom. It was really loud," she said.

Murphy says her friend usually sleeps in that room, and she's just grateful he's alive. They now have a sheet covering the hole left behind.
