HOUSTON (KTRK) -- The chance to get health insurance, under the Affordable Care Act, ends Sunday February 15th.
According to one recent survey, 83 percent of people did not know open enrollment was taking place. In the Houston region, more than 256,000 people have signed up for insurance. However, 1 million are still eligible but have not enrolled.
Idonia Gardner is Executive Director of "Gateway to Care." Gardner encouraged people to take advantage of the ACA. She stressed there is help out there, if the process appears to be overwhelming.
"They won't know a lot about the process or terminology," said Gardner. "That's the reason we have navigators who will visit with you via the telephone or at these open centers. They will help you walk through the process."
Applicants like Shawn McClain wanted to make sure he applied before the deadline. McClain told Eyewitness News he is in between jobs and wants to be covered just in case.
"You never know what happens or if something is going to happen," said McClain. "I don't want to be one of those people who can't get the help I need."
Remember, there is no money exchanged during the sign up process. The billing process comes later.
