HOUSTON (KTRK) -- The United States is dealing with its worst measles outbreak since 1996, with 288 cases reported so far this year.

Measles usually starts with a fever, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Soon after, it causes a cough, runny nose, and red eyes. Then a rash of tiny, red spots breaks out. It starts at the head and spreads to the rest of the body. Measles can be serious for young children. It can lead to pneumonia, encephalitis (swelling of the brain), and death.

The MMRV and MMR vaccines both prevent the disease. The Harris County Health Department does offer vaccinations by appointment. They have four clinics located at 5815 Antoine, Suite A, 1730 Humble Place Drive, 1000 Lee Drive in Baytown, and 3737 Red Bluff Road in Pasadena.
