HAYWARD, WI (KTRK) -- A 16-year-old Wisconsin student was fined $200 for taking a second lunch at school.

A written brief alleges the head cook pressed charges against the students for theft, but the district superintendent says that's false.

Hayward School Superintendent Craig Olson says cases are reported to school administrators, and they decide what to do from there.

"There's some cases referrals to police happen and then police make decisions off statutes and what not," Olson says.

Olson adds the school provides free and reduced meals to students.

Meanwhile, a fundraising page set up to help the teen pay his fine received more than $1,000 in donations.

The woman who started the fundraising says the rest of the money will go to help other students in need.
