Harvey evacuees begin to move from George R. Brown to new shelter locations
HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- After nearly three weeks of living at the George R. Brown Convention Center, flood victims are heading to a new location.
The buses started to arrive at a Houston Community College warehouse around 6 p.m. Saturday. It's a move some shelter users are uneasy to take.
"Everybody panicked when they first said that we were moving," Anne Garrett said. "That's why a lot of people moved out, went to families and motel rooms."
"You get antsy," Dina Riddle said. "You get frustrated. You get tired. You get happy. But I've met a lot of good people in here, and I've met a lot of people who have aggravated me."
After looking at 25 sites, the American Red Cross and city agreed it was the best spot. The facility has air conditioning, 36 showers and 44 bathrooms.
"To be able to be compliant for those with disabilities," American Red Cross spokesperson Maryjane Mudd said, "those with all kinds of needs. There's also a special place where there will be tents for the dogs."
In addition to the shelter, around 150 people are moving to the Residence on Emancipation, which is bunk-style housing. As for those moving to the warehouse, some are sad to say goodbye to a place they've called home for several weeks.
"I'm going to miss the George R. Brown workers," Garrett said. "They've been really good to us. I haven't heard any of them complain or nothing."
There are still hundreds of people at the convention center as of Saturday night. The city plans to bus the majority of them Sunday.
The goal is to have everyone moved out within the next couple of days. There is no timetable as for how long the HCC warehouse will be used.
