Grandma accused of burning 11-year-old girl with hot iron

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- An 11-year-old girl has accused her grandmother of intentionally burning her leg with a hot iron until her skin burned off, court documents show.

Angela Jenkins, 56, of 9000 block of Linda Vista, is charged with injury to a child after a one-and-a-half-inch burn was found on the girl's leg, according to court papers.

The child alleges in court documents that on Nov. 4, 2014, she was burned on her upper thigh after her grandmother accused her of stealing a phone and saying the word "damn." The girl told police her grandmother said, "If you are gonna act like a grown woman, I am going to treat you like one," and then put the tip of her hot iron on the girl's right leg. The girl said she started crying as some of her skin peeled away. The wound later became infected.

Court papers show the girl says she lied to Child Protective Services because she didn't want to get anyone in trouble. The girl says she told CPS she was accidentally burned with a curling iron, according to court documents.

The girl went on to say she is afraid of her grandmother and was hit with an extension cord and belts when she was previously disciplined, according to court documents.

Jenkins contends in court documents that the girl was accidentally burned when the iron fell off of the ironing board. Official papers state the woman "changed her story a couple of more times saying she accidentally touched (the girl) with the iron." Jenkins is also said to have admitted to spanking the girl with a belt and argued that the mark on the girl's leg was from a belt and not an iron.

Court documents also note Jenkins "has another granddaughter with a burn on her arm with conflicting accounts" and a previous inappropriate discipline case in July 2014 was cleared after the "complainant's unwillingness to share the true events that caused her injury."

Jenkins' bail is set at $5,000.
