HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- A man was shot to death outside a west Houston apartment complex early Sunday, and police believe the shooter may have robbed the victim before taking off.

It happened in the 2900 block of South Gessner Road at the Woodchase Apartments around 3:40 a.m.

The victim had stepped outside an apartment when his girlfriend, who was inside, heard gunshots, according to Houston police. The woman went to the window and saw him lying on the ground and someone appeared to be going through the man's pockets.

Investigators said the victim was missing some property he had on him, but it wasn't clear what may have been taken.

Police identified the victim Monday as 28-year-old Dave Stephens.

Stephens worked as a pharmacy technician for a local hospital, according to his family.

The shooter fled the scene and no description was available, but may have left in a white Nissan Rogue SUV.

Investigators were canvassing the area in hopes of finding surveillance video that may show the suspect involved.
