Stephen F. Austin celebrates 80 years during Friday Flyover
HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Today, we celebrate the rich history of Stephen F. Austin High School for Flyover Friday.
The Mustangs caught the eye of the city council during their 80th celebration.
The walls inside of Austin High showcase a war memorial, honoring those who fought in World War II.
Outside the school's library, there are black and white photos from 1965 along with a time capsule with the head of "Steve the Mustang," the 1965 mascot.
"I started teaching here in 1985," teacher Timothy Johnson said.
He's the longest-serving teacher at the school now, celebrating 33 years at Austin High.
"It's a lot more different in terms of technology," said Johnson. "Everything was paper, pencil, and books. I remember our first computer lab, which was big large desktops."
As technology evolved, he says so has his lesson approach.
"Their attention span is different," said Johnson.
The educator says he's been there for some of the school's shining moments. He remembers the time Denzel Washington filmed the movie "Hard Lessons" at Austin High.
"I shook his hand and introduced myself. He was wonderful. He was a rising star that point," Johnson said.
The school has produced talent of its own, from doctors to judges and lawmakers, including sitting council members who recently issued a proclamation for the school's 80th anniversary celebration.
