With the warm weather, fun in the water comes with the hidden dangers of drowning. It can happen in just a matter of seconds.
Experts say when a child drowns, there is usually no splashing and they do not scream, making the situation even scarier.
Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional injury related deaths among children ages 1-4.
Again, it only takes a few moments for a child to drown. Last year, 75 children drowned in Texas, eight of those happening right here in Harris County.
Texas is second in the nation when it comes to the number of drownings each year.
If you want to keep your children safe, remember these tips:
- Never leave your child unattended at the pool or beach
- Always keep a cell phone nearby in case of emergencies
- Parents should learn CPR in case they ever need it in an emergency
- Enroll your children in swim lessons because that could ultimately save their lives
