Houston groups opening doors to kids in wake of Harvey

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- In the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, not all school districts are able to reopen at this time, creating an unexpected need for childcare for some parents.

As part of the on-going efforts to support families affected by Harvey, numerous Houston area organizations are opening their doors to accommodate them.

According to blog site Big Kid Small City, the following places are opening this week for daytime activities for kids:

  • Theatre Under The Stars (Montrose, Theater District)

  • ArtMix (West Alabama)

  • City Artworks (Memorial)

  • Language Kids (Bellaire)

  • Figlia Foods for Flooded Families: Kids Cooking Camps (Energy Corridor/Memorial)

  • Mad Science (Westpark & Hillcroft)

  • HIT! Indoor Baseball (Memorial)

  • Bay Area Racket Club (NASA Pkwy)

  • Discover Gymnastics (Heights)

  • Iron Cross Gymnastics (Richmond)

  • Birons Gymnastics (Energy Corridor)

  • Houston Gymnastics Academy (Bellaire)

  • Bannon's Gymnastix, Sept. 5 only (Champions)

  • Mazeika's Elite Gymnastics (Willowbrook)

  • Cypress Academy Gymnastics (Cypress)

  • Monart School of Art (Bellaire)

  • Little Gym Memorial

  • Friday Nite Live! (Bellaire)

  • Kompany Kids (Galleria)

  • Children's Learning Adventures (Several Locations)

  • Creme de la Creme (Downtown and other locations)

In addition, the YMCA of Greater Houston will open 10 traditional day camp programs throughout the Houston area from Sept. 5-8 for parents who need childcare and for kids to have some fun and regain a sense of normalcy.

At the camps, children will have a chance to participate in sports, swimming, arts and crafts, STEM projects, literacy and build new friendships. The Houston Food Bank will provide breakfast, lunch and snacks.

Children currently enrolled in the YMCA's After School program can participate in these camps free of charge. Children not enrolled in the YMCA's After School program can participate for $80 for the Tuesday-Friday period.

At this time, capacity is limited to a total of 750 children.

The camps will be located at the following locations:

  • Foster Family YMCA

  • Weekley Family YMCA

  • Tellepsen Family YMCA

  • Fort Bend YMCA

  • Alief Family YMCA
