World Cup anthems, past and present

When "We Are One (Ole Ola)" by Pitbull featuring Jennifer Lopez and Claudia Leitte, first came out, it was panned for focusing too heavily on stereotypes of Brazil. Since then, the song hasn't made much progress on the charts.

Can the rap-pop anthem overcome the controversy and take its place as a classic World Cup anthem? Here's a quick look back at some of the catchiest hits from years past:

1. Hot, Hot, Hot - Arrow (1986)

This happy, upbeat anthem is most widely known today for its use in the soccer movie "Bend It Like Beckham."

2. Waka Waka (This Time For Africa) - Shakira feat. Freshlyground (2010)

This song was fun, catchy and had universal popularity, but it also went over well with South Africans for featuring local favorites Freshlyground.

3. Time of Our Lives - Il Divo & Toni Braxton (2006)

This 2006 hit had a decidedly different feel: less gyrating and more epic vocals. Il Divo teamed up with Toni Braxton to sing this sweeping song when Germany hosted in 2006.

4. Boom - Anastacia (2002)

Get ready for a flashback: those of us who survived '90s fashion will see all the hallmarks in this video, including hip-hugger pleather flares, streaked highlighted hair, crop tops and colored sunglasses. This song gets stuck in heads extremely easily, so don't say we didn't warn you.

5. The Cup of Life (La Copa de la Vida) - Ricky Martin (1998)

Ricky Martin has come a long way since the 1998 World Cup in France, but he's immortalized in this signature tune. Allez, allez, allez!
