Should Thanksgiving last a week in HISD?
Parents and community members get to vote on the next school calendar

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Should Thanksgiving break last three days or a whole week next year?

That's just one of the questions HISD is asking community members to consider as they set out to recommend the new school calendar.

The school district has posted two drafts of the 2017-2018 school year calendar and are putting it up for a vote online.

The first version, known as Draft A, aligns with previous years, with school ending on May 31, 2018. This version gives students three days off for Thanksgiving.

The second version, known as Draft B, makes the school year a whole day shorter and gives students the entire week off for the Thanksgiving holiday.

If Draft B is chosen, the school year would end on June 1, 2018.

You have until November 30 to cast your vote.

Administrators will ask the school board to approve a new calendar based on your votes at the December board meeting.

Other school districts have asked for community input in their calendars as well. Clear Creek ISD has voting until November 18.

Pearland ISD approved a district calendar change that ends the 2016-17 school year before Memorial Day by adding five minutes to the school day for all grade levels in the second semester.

With the slightly-lengthened school day, all Pearland ISD students will finish the school year Friday, May 26, and seniors will graduate the same day at NRG Stadium.

Beginning Jan. 3, school hours for the second semester of 2016-17 will change to:

Elementary Schools: 8 a.m. - 3:10 p.m.

Middle/Junior High Schools: 8:35 a.m. - 3:45 p.m.

High Schools: 7:15 a.m. - 2:25 p.m.

PACE Center: 8:35 a.m. - 3:45 p.m.
