Sam Houston State sees rise in STD infections
HUNTSVILLE, TX (KTRK) -- One of the state's oldest academic institutions is seeing an uptick in sexually transmitted diseases.
Officials at Sam Houston State University say the school is seeing more chlamydia and gonorrhea infections.
The news is certain to alarm Bearkats and their parents.
The health center cautions there may not necessarily be an increase, it's just that more students are getting tested.
The best way to avoid STDs like chlamydia and gonorrhea, of course, is to practice safe sex if you are sexually active.
The Centers for Disease Control says you can lower your risk by being in a long-term, mutually monogamous relationship and opting to use latex condoms every time you have sex.
The CDC says both gonorrhea and chlamydia can be cured, but you have to see your doctor for a diagnosis.
Symptoms of Chlamydia
- Discharge from the vagina or penis
- A burning sensation while urinating
- Rectal pain
- Bleeding
- For men, pain or swelling in one or both testicles
Symptoms of Gonorrhea
While most woman do not have symptoms, they might confuse mild symptoms of gonorrhea for having a bladder or vaginal infections.
Men, meanwhile, regularly experience a burning sensation when urinating; a white, yellow or green discharge from the penis; or swollen or pain in the testicles.
Both men and women should also pay attention to rectal infections that may produce:
- Discharge
- Anal itching
- Soreness
- Bleeding
- Painful bowel movements
